§ Privacy Policy
Your data, kept minimal.
LAST UPDATED · April 17, 2026
SplitSmart is an expense-splitting app built and maintained by two independent developers. We take privacy seriously because we’re users of the app too. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and what you can do about it.
Short version: we only collect what the app needs to work. We don’t sell your data, we don’t show you ads, and we don’t run behavioral tracking. Your expenses and balances are only visible to the people you share groups with.
1. What we collect
When you use SplitSmart, we collect the following:
- Account information — your email address, chosen @handle, display name, and (optionally) profile photo. Provided by you at sign-up through our auth provider, Clerk.
- App content — the groups you create, expenses you log, payments and settlements you record, categories, receipts you scan, and messages or notes you add to expenses.
- Device information — if you opt in to push notifications, we store a device push token so we can notify you about activity in your groups.
- Technical data — minimal diagnostic information (e.g. crash reports, error logs) generated by the app and the platforms it runs on.
We do not collect location data, contacts, call logs, SMS, or any information from other apps on your device.
2. How we use your information
- To operate the app — create your account, store your groups and expenses, sync them across your devices, and send notifications you’ve opted into.
- To let you share balances with the friends and groups you’ve added. Group members can see the expenses and balances within groups they belong to.
- To respond to support requests you send us.
- To fix bugs, improve reliability, and understand when something has broken.
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any form of behavioral tracking.
3. Third-party services
To deliver the app, we rely on a small number of trusted infrastructure providers. Each one only receives the data it needs to perform its function:
- Clerk — authentication and account management (handles sign-in, sign-up, session tokens).
- Supabase — database and real-time sync of your groups, expenses, and settlements.
- Expo Push Service — delivers push notifications to your device, if you’ve enabled them.
- Vercel — hosts the public web version of the app at split-free.com.
- Exchange-rate provider — fetches current currency conversion rates. We only send the currency codes we need rates for — never your expense amounts.
Each provider has its own privacy policy. We recommend you review Clerk’s and Supabase’s if you want more detail.
4. How your data is shared
Within the app, data is shared only with the people you choose to share groups or expenses with. Members of a group can see the expenses, balances, participants, and settlements in that group.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. We may disclose information only if legally required (e.g. a valid subpoena) — and we’ll tell you if that happens, unless legally prohibited from doing so.
5. Data retention & deletion
We keep your data as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account at any time from Account → Settings → Delete Account.
When you delete your account, we remove your profile, groups you created that have no other members, and any data that only pertained to you. Expenses in shared groups may be retained for other group members who still rely on them for their own records — your entries will still be attributed to your deleted account with your handle removed.
6. Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access the data we hold about you.
- Export a copy of your data.
- Correct inaccurate data (you can edit most of it directly in the app).
- Delete your account and associated data.
- Opt out of push notifications (from the app or your device settings).
To exercise any of these rights, email us at bernardorubisnes@gmail.com.
7. Security
Data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored encrypted at rest by our infrastructure providers. We use modern authentication (via Clerk) and row-level security policies to ensure that only authorized users can access your data.
No system is perfect. If we ever become aware of a security breach affecting your data, we’ll notify you promptly.
8. Children
SplitSmart is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have, email us and we will delete it.
9. International users
Your data may be processed on servers located outside your country. By using SplitSmart, you consent to this. Our providers maintain industry-standard safeguards for international data transfers.
10. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in-app. Continued use of SplitSmart after changes means you accept the updated policy.
